John declares that nothing brings him deeper gladness than knowing those in his spiritual care are living in the truth.

What Does 3 John 1:4 Mean?

This verse rises out of the report John has just received and gives words to the joy behind it. He calls those he has shepherded "my children," the tender language of a spiritual father who has labored to bring others to faith and longs to see them grow.

No greater joy exists for him than this, that they walk in truth. Not their success, comfort, or praise, but their faithfulness moves him most. Here is the heart of every true teacher, parent, and pastor: to delight more in another's godliness than in any earthly gain. It is a love that seeks the good of others above itself, and it echoes the joy of heaven over every soul who follows the Lord.
