What Does Colossians 1:20 Mean?
Paul completes the great hymn to Christ with reconciliation. The same Father pleased to dwell fully in the Son is pleased through him to reconcile all things -- to restore a broken creation to himself.
The means is striking and specific: peace made through the blood of his cross. The supremacy Paul has been describing does not hold itself aloof; it stoops to the cross and there heals the estrangement that sin caused. The scope is vast -- things in earth and things in heaven -- the whole disordered cosmos brought back toward its Maker. The Lord of all things is also the peacemaker of all things, and at appalling cost. For a church tempted to fear and appease unseen powers, the message is that Christ has already begun setting the entire universe right, and he did it by his own blood.
