Though they were dead in their sins and uncircumcised in heart, God made them alive together with Christ and forgave all their trespasses.

What Does Colossians 2:13 Mean?

Paul describes the before and after with stark honesty. Before, they were dead in your sins -- spiritually lifeless, and the uncircumcision of your flesh marks them as once outside the covenant, far from God.

Then God acted: hath he quickened together with him, made them alive along with Christ. Resurrection life flows to the dead from the risen Lord. And the means is grace -- having forgiven you all trespasses. Every offense is pardoned, the whole debt canceled. Notice that God did this while they were dead; the dead cannot raise themselves, so the life is entirely his gift. For anyone weighed down by a record of sin, this verse is pure relief: God forgives all, and breathes new life into those who had none. The Colossians' standing rests on God's reviving mercy, not on rituals they could perform.
