What Does Colossians 2:17 Mean?
Paul explains why such regulations cannot define a believer's standing. The festivals and food laws were a shadow of things to come -- real in their time, but pointing forward to something greater than themselves.
The reality that casts the shadow has arrived: but the body is of Christ. A shadow shows the shape of a thing without being the thing; once the substance appears, one no longer clings to the outline. Christ is that substance, the fulfillment toward which the old observances always gestured. For the Colossians, this reframes the whole debate. To go back to the shadows after the reality has come would be to prefer the silhouette over the One who casts it. Paul invites them instead to hold fast to Christ himself, in whom everything those signs anticipated is now fully present and real.
