Such a person has lost connection with the Head, Christ, from whom the whole body is nourished, held together, and grows with growth that comes from God.

What Does Colossians 2:19 Mean?

Paul exposes the fatal flaw of the false teacher: not holding the Head. For all the talk of angels and visions, the person has let go of Christ himself, and that is the one connection that cannot be lost without ruin.

From the Head the whole body draws its life -- joints and bands supply nourishment, the members are knit together, and the body increaseth with the increase of God. Growth that is real and God-given flows only from union with Christ. Cut off from him, no spiritual practice can sustain life, however impressive it looks. Paul's image is organic and tender: the church is a living body that thrives only as it stays joined to its Head. For the Colossians, the lesson is plain. Genuine growth is not engineered by techniques but received from Christ, and to drift from him is to wither.
