Paul is giving practical instructions for the Christian household, including servants and masters, urging that all work be done as service to Christ.
What Does Colossians 3:23 Mean?
In one sentence: do everything wholeheartedly, as if working directly for the Lord rather than merely for people. "Whatsoever ye do" includes the ordinary -- work, chores, study -- not just religious activity.
The phrase "heartily" is literally "from the soul," and "as to the Lord" changes the audience of our work: God Himself. This dignifies ordinary labor and frees us from working only to impress people.

The Greek phrase "ek psyches" (heartily) means "from the soul" -- wholehearted. "Ergazomai" (do) means to work or labor.
