What Does Colossians 4:5 Mean?
Paul turns the church's attention outward, to those beyond the community. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without -- toward outsiders, conduct yourselves with discernment, so that your behavior commends rather than discredits the gospel.
He adds, redeeming the time, which means making the most of every opportunity, buying up the moments to do good and bear witness before a watching world. How believers live in view of outsiders matters greatly; their daily conduct is itself a testimony. Paul calls the Colossians to a wise, intentional life that uses each occasion well. For a small church amid a curious or skeptical society, this is vital counsel. Wisdom in dealing with outsiders, and alertness to fleeting opportunities, can open hearts that argument alone cannot. The way they live becomes a doorway through which others may glimpse Christ.
