Context

This verse completes the unit of Ephesians 2:1-10. Having ruled out works as the ground of salvation (2:8-9), Paul shows that good works remain its intended outcome, the very purpose for which God recreates His people.

What Does Ephesians 2:10 Mean?

After explaining that salvation is a gift, Paul shows what the gift produces: a transformed life filled with good works. The word "workmanship" pictures believers as something God has made -- His handiwork, even His masterpiece. The same God who creates is the one shaping each life. And the purpose is stated plainly: we are "created in Christ Jesus unto good works." Good works are not the cause of salvation; they are its fruit and its goal. Grace does not leave a person unchanged -- it launches a new way of living.

The verse closes with a striking phrase: these good works are ones "which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." God has prepared a path of good in advance, and the believer is invited to walk in it. The image of walking suggests a daily, step-by-step journey rather than a single heroic act. Each ordinary day holds works of love and service that fit into God's design. This holds two truths together beautifully: God's initiative in preparing the way, and human responsibility in actually walking the path. The reader is neither a passive object nor a self-made achiever, but a partner -- created by grace, called to act. For anyone wondering whether their life has purpose, this verse answers clearly: you were made for good, and the good works are already laid out, waiting for you to take the next step.

In the Original Language

The Greek "poiema" (workmanship) is the root of the English "poem" -- a thing made or crafted. "Peripateo" (walk) is Paul's frequent metaphor for the conduct of daily life.

Application

Look for the good works set before you today -- a kindness, a task, a word of encouragement. You were crafted for these, and the path is already prepared.
