Context

This verse continues the spiritual armor passage (6:10-20). After calling for strength in the Lord, Paul commands believers to put on God's full armor as protection against an adversary who fights by deception.

What Does Ephesians 6:11 Mean?

Paul introduces a vivid image that runs through the rest of the chapter: "Put on the whole armour of God." Like a soldier preparing for battle, the believer is to be fully equipped -- not partially, but with the whole armor. The crucial detail is that this is "the armour of God": it is supplied by God, not manufactured by us. Each piece, which Paul will describe in the following verses, is a resource God provides for the believer's protection. The action is ours -- we must put it on -- but the equipment is His.

The purpose is clearly stated: "that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." The goal is to stand firm, to hold one's ground against an opponent who fights not by brute force alone but by "wiles" -- crafty schemes, deceptions, and strategies. This tells us something important about the spiritual struggle: it often comes through cunning and temptation rather than open assault, which is why being equipped beforehand matters so much. A soldier does not wait until the battle to put on armor. For the reader, this verse is a practical summons to preparation. We face a real adversary who works by deception, and we cannot stand in our own strength or unprepared. But God has provided everything needed. The call is to take up what He supplies, put it on, and so be ready to stand firm when the testing comes.

In the Original Language

The Greek "panoplia" (whole armour) means a soldier's complete equipment. "Methodeia" (wiles) means crafty schemes or strategies, the root of the English "method."

Application

Do not wait for the day of testing to prepare. Daily take up the resources God supplies -- His truth, righteousness, faith, and word -- so you can stand firm against deception.
