Context

Trapped between the Red Sea and the advancing Egyptian army, the terrified Israelites cry out, and Moses calls them to trust God.

What Does Exodus 14:13 Mean?

This verse means that when deliverance is beyond human power, the right response is to stop, trust, and watch God act. Israel is trapped: the sea ahead, Pharaoh's army behind, and panic spreading through the camp. Moses does not hand them a plan or a weapon. He gives them four steady commands -- fear not, stand still, see the salvation of the LORD, He will show it to you today -- and a promise that the enemy they dread will be gone forever.

"Stand still" is a startling instruction in a moment that seems to demand action. It does not mean idle passivity; it means refusing to be ruled by fear and making room for God to do what only God can do. The salvation that day was entirely the LORD's work; Israel's task was to trust. There are crises in every life where striving harder only deepens the panic, and the truest faith is to be still and let God show His power. The God who shut the door on Egypt's pursuit is the same God who meets His people at every impossible sea.

In the Original Language

The word "salvation" is the Hebrew yeshuʿah, deliverance or rescue; "stand still" renders yatsab, to take a firm stand.

Application

When you face a crisis you cannot solve, resist panic, hold steady, and trust God to act where you cannot.
