Context

In his closing words, Paul contrasts his opponents' desire to boast in outward religious marks with his own refusal to glory in anything but the cross of Christ.

What Does Galatians 6:14 Mean?

Paul declares the one thing he will boast in: not his achievements or credentials, but the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. He has just noted that others wanted to glory in outward marks of religion; he sets himself entirely apart. "God forbid" is his strongest possible refusal -- the very idea of boasting in anything else is unthinkable to him. The cross, an instrument of shame in his world, becomes the single ground of his pride.

Then he explains what the cross did: "the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world." A double severing has happened. The system of values, status, and approval he once chased no longer holds power over him, and he in turn is dead to its pull. This is the personal end of everything the letter has resisted -- standing built on human credentials. By identifying with Christ's death, Paul's old life and its measurements were nailed up and left behind. The cross both saves and redefines; it cuts the cord between him and a world that ranks people by the wrong things. For the reader, the verse asks what we are tempted to boast in and offers a better center. When the cross becomes your only glory, the world's verdicts lose their grip.

In the Original Language

Kauchasthai, "to glory," means to boast or take pride; stauros, "cross," was an instrument of shameful death; estaurōtai, "is crucified," describes the mutual severing between Paul and the world.

Application

Ask what you reach for to feel significant; when the cross of Christ becomes your only boast, the world's rankings and approvals lose their hold on you.
