This verse comes as Abraham and Isaac approach the place of sacrifice, after God has tested Abraham by commanding him to offer his son.
What Does Genesis 22:8 Mean?
Genesis 22:8 means that, in the most agonizing test of his life, Abraham answered his son's question about the missing sacrifice with an expression of trust: God Himself would provide the lamb. As father and son climbed the mountain, Isaac asked where the lamb was, and Abraham's reply rested the whole situation on God's provision.
These words carry layers of meaning. On the surface, Abraham trusts that God will supply what the offering requires. Beneath that, his faith holds firm even when he cannot see how God will keep His promise to make Isaac the bearer of countless descendants. "God will provide himself a lamb" is faith speaking into the unknown. The closing line, "so they went both of them together," repeats an earlier phrase and quietly underscores their shared obedience and Abraham's steady resolve. Christians have long heard in this verse an anticipation of God's ultimate provision -- the Lamb whom God Himself would give for the world. The verse models trust at its costliest: continuing to obey and to believe that God will provide, even when the path leads through the valley of impossible demand.
In the Original Language
The Hebrew verb "ra'ah" (to see, here rendered "provide") literally means God will "see to" the lamb, anticipating the place-name Jehovah-jireh.
