One day the whole earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD's glory, as completely as waters fill the sea.

What Does Habakkuk 2:14 Mean?

Amid the woes shines this radiant promise. Over against the empty toil of empires, God declares that the earth will be filled with the knowledge of His glory, as fully and pervasively as water fills the sea. Babylon's glory is doomed to the fire; God's glory will saturate all creation.

This is the great horizon toward which all history bends. The violence and pride of nations are passing; the knowledge of God's glory is the destination. The image of waters covering the sea speaks of total, inescapable fullness — no dry patch left untouched. For the weary and the oppressed, this is breathtaking hope: the present darkness is not the end of the story. The day is coming when every eye will see and every heart will know the glory of the Lord, and nothing unjust will remain to obscure it.

In the Original Language

kavod (כָּבוֹד), 'glory' — the weighty splendor and manifest presence of God, here destined to fill the whole earth.
