What Does Hebrews 12:29 Mean?
Hebrews 12:29 declares in a single short sentence that our God is a consuming fire, grounding the call to reverent worship in His holy nature. Brief as it is, the verse carries great weight. It supplies the reason for the reverence and godly fear urged in the previous verse: we serve God with awe because of who He is. The word "for" connects the two; reverence is fitting precisely because God is a consuming fire.
