Context

Within the song of chapter 26, verse 4 follows the promise of peace by commanding enduring trust in the LORD, the unshakable Rock.

What Does Isaiah 26:4 Mean?

Isaiah 26:4 is a direct call to place lasting trust in the LORD, because in Him is strength that never fails. Following the promise of peace in verse 3, this verse issues the command that makes such peace possible: "Trust ye in the LORD for ever." The word "for ever" rules out trust that wavers with circumstances; it calls for a settled, lifelong reliance.

The reason given is the heart of the verse. The original phrase behind "everlasting strength" is striking -- it speaks of God as a Rock of ages, an enduring foundation that time cannot erode. Where human supports crumble, God remains immovable. The repeated divine name underscores His eternal, unchanging nature: He is the same yesterday, today, and always. To trust such a God is not naive optimism but the most reasonable response to His character. People often anchor their hope to things that pass away -- wealth, health, status, other people -- and are shaken when those things shift. This verse redirects trust to the one foundation that cannot move. Because God is an everlasting Rock, the trust placed in Him can be everlasting too. Here is the soil in which the perfect peace of the previous verse takes root and grows secure.

In the Original Language

"Everlasting strength" renders the phrase tzur olamim, literally "Rock of ages" -- an eternal, immovable foundation. The doubled divine name Yah YHWH stresses God's eternal being.

Application

Move your trust off the things that can be shaken and onto God, the everlasting Rock who never fails or fades.
