Context

Continuing the assurance of Isaiah 43, verse 2 promises God's sustaining presence through trials, picturing waters and fire as dangers that cannot destroy His people.

What Does Isaiah 43:2 Mean?

Isaiah 43:2 promises that God will be with His people through every danger -- the waters will not overflow them and the fire will not burn them. Notably, the verse says "when," not "if." Trials are assumed; floods and flames will come. The promise is not exemption from hardship but God's presence within it.

Two pictures of overwhelming danger are used. "Waters" and "rivers" suggest being swept away, drowning under circumstances too strong to resist. "Fire" and "flame" suggest being consumed, the most destructive of forces. To both, God speaks the same assurance: "I will be with thee." The waters will not overflow; the fire will not burn. This does not mean believers never feel the heat or the flood -- it means these forces will not have the final word or destroy those God holds. The heart of the promise is His presence: "I will be with thee" is the anchor of the whole verse. Following the assurance of redemption in verse 1, this verse shows what belonging to God means in practice -- He goes with His people through the very midst of trouble. For anyone walking through deep waters or fierce fire, the comfort is not that the trial is small, but that they do not walk through it alone.

In the Original Language

"Pass through" is avar, to cross over. "Overflow" is shataph, to flood or sweep away. "I will be with thee" centers on the promise of God's accompanying presence.

Application

When you face overwhelming trials, cling to the promise that God goes through them with you; you will not be swept away or consumed.
