Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah 9:6 foretells a child whose birth brings God's own rule, crowned with names that reveal His greatness. The verse opens with intimacy -- "unto us" -- twice, stressing that this child is given as a gift to the people. He is both born (truly human) and given (sent from God), and upon His shoulder rests the weight of government, the authority to reign.

Then comes the cascade of names, each a window into who He is. "Wonderful, Counsellor" tells of perfect wisdom and miraculous purpose. "The mighty God" ascribes divine power to this child, declaring Him to be more than an ordinary ruler. "The everlasting Father" portrays Him as one who fathers and protects His people enduringly, a fountain of life that never fails. "The Prince of Peace" promises a reign that brings wholeness and reconciliation. Christians have long read this as a prophecy of Jesus, the One in whom God comes near to rule and to save. The piling up of titles refuses to let any single category contain Him. Born as a child, He bears names that belong to God -- and the verse invites every reader to wonder at a Savior who is at once tender enough to be cradled and mighty enough to govern all things.
