What Does James 1:6 Mean?
The asking must be made in faith, with nothing wavering. The wavering James describes is not honest uncertainty but a divided allegiance, a heart pulled two directions at once, half trusting God and half trusting something else.
His image is vivid: such a person is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by every wind. There is no stillness in him, no settled ground, only motion at the mercy of whatever pushes hardest. Faith gives the soul an anchor. To ask in faith is to commit oneself wholly to the One being asked, resting on His character rather than being thrown about by every fear and second thought.
In the Original Language
diakrino (διακρίνω), 'wavering' -- to be divided within oneself, hesitating between two judgments.
