James concludes his appeal for humility before God, promising that those who lower themselves will be exalted by the Lord himself.
What Does James 4:10 Mean?
James gives a command and a promise in a single breath: humble yourself before the Lord, and he will lift you up. This sums up the whole movement of the passage. The way up, in God's economy, runs through the way down. Those who lower themselves before God are the ones he exalts.
To "humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord" means to take an honest, lowly place before God -- acknowledging dependence, confessing sin, abandoning pride and self-sufficiency. It is the opposite of the boasting and self-confidence James condemns elsewhere in the chapter. The phrase "in the sight of the Lord" matters: this humility is directed Godward, not a show for people but a true posture of the heart before the One who sees all. The promise is striking -- "he shall lift you up." God does not leave the humble in the dust; he raises them. The lifting is his work and his timing, but it is certain. This is the consistent pattern of Scripture: God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. The path to genuine honor is not self-promotion but surrender, and the one who takes the low place trusts God to do the raising.
In the Original Language
The word "humble" is tapeinoo, to make low or bring down; "lift up" renders hypsoo, to raise high or exalt.
