James draws his teaching on prayer to a climax, urging mutual confession and intercession and affirming the great power of earnest, righteous prayer.
What Does James 5:16 Mean?
James calls believers into a life of mutual honesty and intercession: confess your faults to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. This brings the hidden struggles of the heart into the light of trusted relationships, where they can be carried to God together. Sin and weakness lose much of their grip when they are no longer concealed.
The two commands belong together. Confession opens the door, and prayer follows; we admit our faults to one another and then lift one another before God. The promised result is healing -- a word that can reach the whole person, body and soul. James then adds a ringing assurance about prayer itself: "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." Prayer offered earnestly and from a heart right with God is not weak or empty; it accomplishes much. This is meant to encourage every believer to pray boldly for others, confident that God hears and acts. The verse weaves together humility, community, and confidence in prayer. In a fellowship where people are honest about their failings and faithful in praying for each other, real healing comes, because God responds to such earnest, righteous prayer.
In the Original Language
The word "effectual fervent" renders energeo, to be at work or operative; "availeth much" is ischyo poly, to be strong and accomplish much.
