During His final discourse before the crucifixion, Jesus connects love for Him with obedience, immediately before promising the gift of the Holy Spirit to empower His followers.
What Does John 14:15 Mean?
Jesus is teaching that genuine love for Him will naturally show itself in obedience to what He commands. This brief verse joins two things that people often try to separate: love and obedience. Jesus does not say "obey me in order to earn my love," nor does He treat love as a feeling that exists apart from action. He ties them together. Real love for Christ is not merely warm affection or admiration; it expresses itself in a life that honors His words.
The order of the sentence matters. Love comes first -- "if ye love me" -- and obedience follows as its fruit. Keeping His commandments is not a cold duty imposed from outside but the natural overflow of a heart devoted to Him. This protects the verse from becoming mere legalism on one hand or empty sentiment on the other. Where there is true love, there will be a desire to please the One loved. Spoken on the night before His death, these words also set the stage for what follows: in the very next verse Jesus promises the Comforter, the Spirit who would enable such obedience. He does not leave His disciples to keep His commandments by sheer willpower. Love for Christ, the gift of the Spirit, and a life of obedience belong together, each flowing into the next.
In the Original Language
The Greek "agapate" (ἀγαπᾶτε) means to love with deliberate, self-giving love, and "teresete" (τηρήσετε), from "tereo," means to keep, guard, or watch over -- to treasure and obey.
