Lamentations mourns the destruction of Jerusalem. In the book's darkest center, the writer deliberately turns his mind to God's mercy and finds reason to hope.
What Does Lamentations 3:22-23 Mean?
In one sentence: even in deep suffering, God's steadfast love never runs out -- it is renewed fresh every single morning. These words shine in the middle of a book of grief; the prophet finds hope not in changed circumstances but in God's unchanging mercy.
"New every morning" means each day brings a fresh supply of grace, enough for that day. The response is worship: "great is thy faithfulness." Hope here is honest -- it does not deny the pain, but anchors beyond it.
In the Original Language
The Hebrew "chesed" (mercies) is steadfast, covenant love. "Rachamim" (compassions) is tender mercy. "Emunah" (faithfulness) is steadiness and reliability.
