Context

Part of Jesus' teaching on possessions and trust, immediately after His call to provide treasure in heaven that does not fail rather than treasure on earth.

What Does Luke 12:34 Mean?

Jesus states a simple but penetrating truth about the human heart: it follows whatever we treasure. Where we invest what we value most -- our resources, our energy, our affections -- there our heart will be drawn. This verse comes right after Jesus urges His disciples to lay up treasure in heaven rather than on earth, and it explains why that matters so deeply.

The principle works in both directions, but Jesus states it pointing one way: our treasure leads, and our heart follows. This is profound because it reverses the way we usually think. We tend to assume that we invest in what we already love. Jesus shows that the reverse is also true -- what we invest in shapes and captures our love. If our treasure is earthly, our hearts will be bound to earthly things, which fade and fail. But if we lay up treasure in heaven by generosity, devotion to God, and storing up what is eternal, our hearts will be drawn heavenward. This gives us a practical way to examine our lives. We can ask: where is my treasure? Where do my money, my time, and my best energies go? The honest answer reveals where our heart truly is. And it offers hope, for by deliberately investing in what is eternal, we can train our hearts to love what God loves.

In the Original Language

The word thesauros means "treasure, storehouse, what is stored up and valued." Kardia (heart) refers to the center of one's affections, will, and inner life.

Application

Examine where your treasure goes, for your heart follows your investments; deliberately store up what is eternal.
