The principle Jesus draws from His parable about guests choosing seats at a wedding feast, taught at a meal in the house of a leading Pharisee.
What Does Luke 14:11 Mean?
Jesus states a great reversal that runs through all of His teaching: those who lift themselves up will be brought low, and those who humble themselves will be lifted up. He has just told a parable about guests choosing the best seats at a feast, advising them to take the lowest place rather than the highest. Now He gives the principle behind that advice.
The two halves of the verse mirror each other in perfect contrast. Self-exaltation -- grasping for honor, status, and recognition -- leads in the end to being humbled. But humility -- taking the lower place, not seeking one's own glory -- leads to being exalted. This is not merely social advice about dinner etiquette; it reveals how God's kingdom works. The world's way is to push forward and promote oneself, but God's way honors the humble. There is a quiet warning here against pride, which sets us up for a fall, and a gracious promise to the humble, who will be raised up in God's good timing. Importantly, the exalting in the second half is something God does -- "shall be exalted." We are not told to humble ourselves as a strategy to get ahead, but to genuinely take the lowly place, trusting that honor comes from God, not from self-promotion. This pattern is seen supremely in Christ Himself, who humbled Himself and was exalted by God.
In the Original Language
The verb hypsoo means "to exalt, lift up," and tapeinoo means "to humble, bring low." The passive forms point to God as the one who ultimately abases or exalts.
