Context

This is the final line of the threefold priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24-26. After asking for God's blessing, keeping, shining favor, and grace, the blessing culminates in His lifted countenance and the gift of shalom, sealing Israel under God's name before their wilderness journey.

What Does Numbers 6:26 Mean?

Numbers 6:26 brings the priestly blessing to its climax: that the LORD would lift up His countenance upon His people and give them peace. To "lift up the countenance" is to raise one's face toward another with attention and acceptance, the gesture of a friend who looks you full in the eyes rather than glancing away. It is intimacy and approval combined. The blessing then crowns everything with the great Hebrew word 'shalom' -- here translated "peace." Shalom means far more than the absence of conflict; it is wholeness, completeness, health, harmony, and flourishing in every part of life. It is the state of being where nothing is broken and nothing is missing. This is the destination toward which the whole blessing has been moving: from God's blessing and keeping (v. 24), to His gracious shining face (v. 25), to His full, attentive presence that produces deep and lasting peace. Peace is the summary and fruit of all God's favor. When the LORD turns His face toward His people, the result is a settled, whole-life well-being that no circumstance can finally take away. It is fitting that the blessing God authored for His people ends not with a demand but with a gift -- shalom freely bestowed.

This peace is rooted in God Himself, not in our circumstances. The same word echoes through Scripture as the deepest longing of the human heart, and the prophets foretold a coming reign of perfect shalom. For the believer, this verse is both a prayer and a promise: that as God lifts His face toward us, His peace will guard our hearts. We do not manufacture this peace; we receive it from the One whose presence is its source. In a world of restlessness, the closing word of the Aaronic blessing remains God's word over His people -- peace.

In the Original Language

The Hebrew 'nasa' (lift up) describes raising the face toward someone in acceptance, and 'shalom' (peace) means wholeness, completeness, and flourishing well-being in every dimension of life.

Application

Receive God's peace as a gift rather than striving to create it. When anxiety rises, return to the picture of God lifting His face toward you in acceptance, and let His shalom -- His wholeness and well-being -- settle your heart and order your life around His presence.
