What Does Philippians 1:25 Mean?
Out of his love for the Philippians, Paul reaches a settled expectation. He believes he will remain and continue with them all, and he names the purpose: their progress and joy of faith.
Paul's aim in living is never merely to survive but to serve the growth and gladness of others in believing. He wants their faith to advance and their joy to increase, and he is willing to spend his remaining days toward that end. Notice that joy reappears, as it does throughout this letter; faith and joy belong together. A life given to helping others grow and rejoice in Christ is a life with clear purpose, and Paul embraces it gladly for their sake.
