This verse continues the climax of the passage on Christ, describing the universal homage that follows His exaltation by God the Father.
What Does Philippians 2:10 Mean?
Paul declares the purpose of Christ's exaltation: that all creation, throughout every realm, would bow in homage at His name. The bowing of the knee is the ancient gesture of submission and reverence, the body's acknowledgment of a rightful authority. Paul sweeps the entire created order into this homage -- "things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth" -- a comprehensive expression meaning that no part of creation lies outside Christ's dominion. Angels above, the living on earth, and all that is beneath are included in this universal recognition.
The phrase echoes the prophetic vision in Isaiah, where God declares that to Him every knee shall bow; Paul applies this honor to Jesus, affirming the exalted dignity now His. This is not coerced worship that destroys meaning, but the fitting and inevitable response to the One whom God has lifted above all. The verse looks ahead to the day when Christ's lordship will be openly acknowledged everywhere. For the reader, it both inspires present worship and offers assurance: the name at which every knee will one day bow is the name of the Savior who humbled Himself in love. To bow now in willing devotion is to anticipate what all creation will ultimately do.
In the Original Language
The phrase "pan gony" (every knee) and the threefold realms echo Isaiah 45:23; "kamptō" (bow) denotes the act of bending the knee in submission and reverence.
