Paul hopes to send Timothy soon so that news of the Philippians will encourage him.

What Does Philippians 2:19 Mean?

Paul turns to practical plans. He hopes, trusting in the Lord Jesus, to send Timothy to the Philippians soon, so that when Timothy returns with news of them, Paul himself may be comforted.

Even his travel arrangements are placed under the Lord's hand, made in trust rather than mere planning. Paul's care for the Philippians is so genuine that good news of their welfare would lift his own spirits in prison. He thinks not only of what he can give them through Timothy but of the comfort their faithfulness will bring him. This is the give-and-take of true Christian affection, where each side longs for the other's good and is gladdened by it. Paul models a love that plans, that sends help, and that is nourished in turn by the health of those it loves.
