This verse follows Paul's instruction to bring every anxiety to God in prayer with thanksgiving, and it states the result of doing so.
What Does Philippians 4:7 Mean?
Paul promises that God's own peace, which surpasses human comprehension, will guard the hearts and minds of those who bring their concerns to Him. This verse follows directly on the call to pray about everything with thanksgiving rather than being anxious; the peace described here is the fruit of that prayerful trust. It is "the peace of God" -- not a peace humans generate by managing their circumstances, but a peace that comes from God Himself, flowing from His character and presence. This is why it "passeth all understanding": it cannot be fully explained or accounted for by the situation, often appearing precisely where worry would be expected.
The verb "keep" is a military term -- it means to guard or stand sentinel, like a garrison protecting a city. God's peace mounts watch over the believer's "hearts and minds," protecting both the emotions and the thoughts from being overrun by anxiety. And this guarding peace comes "through Christ Jesus," who is the one in whom believers are secured. For the reader, this verse offers a concrete promise tied to a practice: when we entrust our worries to God in prayer, He answers not always by changing the circumstance, but by stationing His peace as a guard over the inner life, holding the heart steady in Christ.
In the Original Language
The verb "phroureō" (keep) is a military term meaning to guard or garrison; "hyperechō" (passeth) means to surpass or exceed, here surpassing all human understanding.
