This verse appears among the contrasting two-line proverbs of chapter 10, setting hatred's appetite for conflict against love's instinct to forgive and restore.
What Does Proverbs 10:12 Mean?
Hatred breeds conflict, but love responds to wrongs by covering them rather than spreading them. This short proverb draws a sharp contrast between two forces and their opposite effects. Hatred "stirreth up strifes" -- it agitates, provokes, and keeps quarrels alive. Love does the reverse: it "covereth all sins," choosing to absorb and forgive rather than expose and inflame.
The image of stirring is vivid. Hatred is restless; it digs up old offenses, repeats grievances, and fans small sparks into flames. Wherever hatred is at work, conflict multiplies, because the hateful heart wants the quarrel to continue. Love operates by a different instinct. To "cover" sins does not mean to ignore evil or excuse genuine wrongdoing; it means to refuse to broadcast, exploit, or hold over someone the failings that love could overlook. Rather than parading another's faults, love draws a covering of forgiveness over them. This is one of Scripture's most practical pictures of how love behaves in relationships. The contrast also reveals motive: hatred wants division, while love wants restoration. The same offense can either be amplified by a hateful response or quietly absorbed by a loving one. The proverb commends the way of love -- the willingness to forgive and to stop the cycle of strife before it spreads.
In the Original Language
"Stirreth up" renders 'ur, to rouse or awaken. "Covereth" is kasah, to conceal or cover over -- here, to forgive rather than expose another's faults.
