Within chapter 16's meditation on God's sovereignty over human affairs, this verse balances genuine human planning with the LORD's guidance over the path actually taken.
What Does Proverbs 16:9 Mean?
We make our plans, but God ultimately guides where we actually go. This proverb holds two truths in balance without canceling either one. On one side, "a man's heart deviseth his way" -- people genuinely think, plan, and chart a course. On the other, "the LORD directeth his steps" -- God superintends the actual path a life takes.
The first line affirms real human agency. We are meant to plan; "deviseth" describes the active work of thinking ahead, weighing options, and choosing a direction. The Bible never treats planning as wrong or pointless. We are responsible to use our minds and make wise choices. The second line, however, sets that planning within a larger reality: "the LORD directeth his steps." While we map out the way in our hearts, God guides the individual steps we actually take. This pairing keeps the reader from two opposite errors. It guards against the pride of assuming we control our own destiny entirely, and it guards against the passivity of refusing to plan at all. Both human deliberation and divine guidance are real and work together. The verse invites a posture of humble confidence: we plan thoughtfully and act diligently, yet we hold our plans with open hands, trusting that God is at work directing our steps toward ends we cannot fully foresee. We propose; He guides.
In the Original Language
"Deviseth" renders chashav, to plan, think out, or calculate. "Directeth" is kun, to establish or make firm -- here, God securing the steps a person actually takes.
