Context

Proverbs 4 climaxes in a call to guard the body's faculties -- heart, mouth, eyes, feet; verse 23 leads with the heart as the source that governs all the rest.

What Does Proverbs 4:23 Mean?

Guard your inner life above everything, because the whole course of your life flows from it. This verse may be the most concentrated piece of wisdom in the chapter. It commands diligent watch over the heart -- not occasional attention, but vigilant, ongoing care -- because the heart is the wellspring from which everything else proceeds.

In Hebrew thought the heart is far more than the seat of feeling. It is the command center of the inner person: the place of thoughts, desires, decisions, and the direction of one's will. The phrase "issues of life" pictures the heart as a spring or source from which streams of conduct flow outward into every action and word. This means the outer life can never rise higher than the inner life that feeds it. Guard the source, and the streams run clean; neglect it, and corruption spreads to everything downstream. "With all diligence" -- literally "above all guarding" -- ranks this above every other thing a person might protect. We instinctively guard our money, our reputation, our safety; this proverb insists the heart deserves the most careful watch of all. What we allow to take root within us in our private thoughts will eventually shape the entire visible course of our lives.

In the Original Language

"Keep" renders natsar, to guard or watch over. "Issues" translates totsa'ot, outgoings or sources, picturing the heart as a spring from which streams of life flow.

Application

Watch carefully over your thoughts, desires, and motives, knowing that your private inner life will eventually shape every word and action.
