Context

Psalm 116 is a personal thanksgiving for deliverance from death. Verse 1 opens with the psalmist's love for God, grounded in the experience of answered prayer.

What Does Psalm 116:1 Mean?

This verse opens with one of the most personal statements in all the Psalms: "I love the LORD." It is not a command to others or a general truth about God; it is the psalmist's own confession of affection. And he gives the reason at once: "because he hath heard my voice and my supplications." His love is rooted in a real experience -- God listened to him when he prayed.

There is something deeply moving in this. The psalmist had been in trouble, as the verses that follow make clear, surrounded by the sorrows of death and the pains of distress. He cried out, and God heard. That answered cry produced love. Notice the order: God's attentive listening came first, and the psalmist's love is the response. He loves God not in the abstract but because he has experienced God bending down to hear him. The word "supplications" pictures earnest, pleading prayer -- the kind offered in desperation. To know that God hears such prayers, that He is not distant or indifferent but attentive to a struggling voice, is enough to kindle love. The verse invites the reader to recall their own answered prayers and to let the memory of God's attentiveness deepen their love for Him.

In the Original Language

"Supplications" renders the Hebrew tachanun, earnest pleas for mercy; "heard" is shama, which means not just to hear sound but to listen attentively and respond.

Application

Let the memory of answered prayer fuel your love for God: recall the times He heard your cry, and let that experience of His attentiveness draw your heart to Him.
