Psalm 25 is a prayer for direction and deliverance. This verse extends David's request for guidance by anchoring it in God as Savior and in patient, all-day waiting upon Him.
What Does Psalm 25:5 Mean?
Psalm 25:5 continues David's prayer for guidance, asking God to lead him in truth and teach him, because God is the God of his salvation on whom he waits all day long. This verse builds on the previous one, deepening the request and grounding it in who God is.
"Lead me in thy truth, and teach me" combines guidance with instruction. David wants not only to be shown the way but to be led along it and taught as he goes. "Thy truth" points to God's reliable, faithful reality -- the firm ground on which a life can safely be built. Then David gives his reasons. First, "for thou art the God of my salvation": the One he asks to lead him is the very One who saves and rescues him, so he can trust God's direction completely. Second, "on thee do I wait all the day": David's hope and expectation rest on God continually, through every hour. The word for wait carries the sense of hopeful, patient expectation, like looking eagerly for someone you trust to arrive. This verse models a guidance that flows out of relationship: David asks to be led because he already knows God as Savior, and he waits on God all day because his hope is fixed there. For the believer, the path to guidance is paved with trust and patient waiting on the God who saves.
In the Original Language
The verb qivviti, "I wait," conveys hopeful, expectant waiting -- a patient looking to God with confident expectation rather than passive delay.
