Psalm 63 is traditionally set in the wilderness, where David expresses intense longing for God. Verse 1 opens with his earnest, whole-person thirst for God's presence.
What Does Psalm 63:1 Mean?
This verse expresses an early, earnest seeking of God and a thirst for him that fills both soul and body, like a person parched in a waterless land. The opening claim is intimate -- "O God, thou art my God" -- a declaration of belonging that grounds everything that follows. From that bond springs an urgent desire to seek God before all else.
"Early will I seek thee" speaks of priority and eagerness, the heart turning to God at the start, as the first thing. Then the longing is described as total: "my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee." Both the inner self and the whole body are caught up in the desire; this is no abstract, detached devotion but a hunger felt through one's entire being. The setting deepens it -- "in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is." Tradition links this psalm to David in the wilderness, where physical thirst became a vivid picture of spiritual longing. The barren land mirrors the soul's sense of needing God as the body needs water. The verse honors a seeking that is urgent, prioritized, and whole-hearted, and it assures the reader that the One sought is the very source who can satisfy such thirst.
In the Original Language
The Hebrew shachar ("early will I seek") suggests seeking eagerly at dawn, and tsama' ("thirsteth") means to thirst or long for intensely.
