This verse follows the vision of war in heaven, where the great accuser is cast down, and explains how the saints on earth share in that victory.
What Does Revelation 12:11 Mean?
Revelation 12:11 reveals how God's people triumph over the accuser -- through the blood of the Lamb, the word of their testimony, and a love for Christ greater than for their own lives. After describing the casting down of the great accuser, the heavenly voice declares how the saints prevail against him, naming three intertwined weapons of victory.
First, "the blood of the Lamb" is the foundation: Christ's sacrificial death is what defeats the accuser's charges, for those redeemed by His blood stand forgiven and secure. Second, "the word of their testimony" is the believers' faithful witness to Christ, their open confession of Him refusing to be silenced even under threat. Third, "they loved not their lives unto the death" describes a devotion so complete that they would rather die than deny their Lord. These three belong together -- the victory Christ won is received by faith, declared by testimony, and held fast through sacrificial loyalty. This verse offers profound encouragement to believers under pressure. The accuser's power is already broken at the cross, and faithful witness carries that victory forward. Those who love Christ above their own lives share in a triumph that even death cannot reverse.
In the Original Language
"Overcame" is "nikao" (νικάω), to conquer or be victorious. "Testimony" is "marturia" (μαρτυρία), witness or testimony, the root of the word martyr.
