Mission San Rafael Arcángel

About this church

Mission San Rafael Arcángel is part of Saint Raphael Parish in downtown San Rafael, where the Mission Chapel and 1919 parish church share one property. Weekday Mass is celebrated at 8:30 a.m. in the Mission, as is Saturday morning Mass. Weekend worship across the parish includes Saturday Mass at 4:30 in Saint Sylvester Chapel and 5 in the church, plus Sunday Masses in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Brazilian, and Vietnamese communities. Visitors should use the location labels on the schedule carefully because not every Mass is held inside the Mission Chapel.

The original mission combined sleeping, cooking, and worship space and grew into a large community that included Coast Miwok people. A replica of the early mission was built beside the parish church in 1949 on the approximate hospital-mission site. Today's religious education serves first grade through Confirmation, with English and bilingual Spanish-English classes and a two-year high-school Confirmation program that includes service hours, Youth Mass, and retreat participation. Choirs support several languages, while parish ministries connect liturgy with mental-health care and community service. A first visit focused specifically on the Mission should use the 8:30 weekday or Saturday Mass and confirm that a special liturgy has not changed the location.
