About this church
Burr Oak & Hesper Lutheran Parish is a two-congregation ELCA ministry in the Decorah area, with worship alternating between Burr Oak Lutheran Church and Hesper Lutheran Church. Each Sunday has an 8:30 a.m. early service at one church and a 10 a.m. late service at the other. Burr Oak hosts the early service in odd-numbered months and the late service in even-numbered months; Hesper follows the opposite pattern. Coffee hour follows every early service, Holy Communion is celebrated on the first and third Sundays, and worship is also available through Facebook Live. Annual meetings, Easter, Laura Days, and Steam Engine Days can alter the usual pattern, making the current parish calendar especially important.
The parish describes its purpose as proclaiming Christ's love through Word and Sacrament while nurturing faith through worship, education, and fellowship. Wednesday School runs during the school year from August through May, with varied classroom activities and a winter program; Vacation Bible School is offered in summer. Women’s groups, circles, a Luther League, committees, parish news, cemeteries, and downloadable sermons and bulletins provide additional ways to participate. The directory address is Hesper's parish office at 3794 188th Avenue; Burr Oak meets at 2358 360th Street. Worship duration, guest parking, an accessible route, nursery operation, family check-in, and listening support remain absent from the program material.
