What Grace Media is

Grace Media is a video-on-demand service published by Grace Community Church, a non-denominational, elder-led congregation in Sun Valley, California. The app carries the church's own productions rather than a licensed third-party catalogue: a feature documentary, a hymn-teaching series, a two-season children's series, short MacArthur segments, class recordings, baptism testimonies, recent sermons and worship services, and a live Sunday stream. It launched on 1 May 2021 and is at version 9.0.1.

It runs on Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV, iOS, Android and in a browser, and it is free throughout with no advertising and no in-app purchases. Resolution adapts to connection speed and can be set manually up to 1080p. An account is mandatory to watch. It is paid for by donations to the church, solicited as one-time or monthly gifts rather than inside a paywall.

Grace Media, Grace to You and gracechurch.org: which of the three you actually want

These are three distinct products with overlapping names, and picking the wrong one is the most common mistake here. Grace Media is the church's original-content streaming app: documentaries, music, children's programming, class material, recent sermons and the Sunday livestream. Grace to You is the separate broadcast ministry, now led by Matt MacArthur, named its president on 29 August 2025; it holds the sermon archive, described as approximately 3,600 sermons with hundreds never broadcast, distributed free from gty.org. The church website, gracechurch.org, is where current preaching is published week by week, with series pages, video, a YouTube channel and podcast feeds, and no account required.

So: for MacArthur's verse-by-verse teaching, go to Grace to You, not Grace Media. For this Sunday's sermon or last month's series, gracechurch.org is faster and needs no sign-up. For The Essential Church, Hymnology or Ranger Joe on a television, Grace Media is the only place they are free. The store listing never draws that line, and the 4.9 average conceals how many people install the app looking for an archive it does not hold.

What is actually in the library

The church's Grace Media FAQ is the only public inventory, and it is short: 'Adventures with Ranger Joe, Hymnology, and Minute with MacArthur,' plus 'Men of the Word and EWG lessons, sermons, baptism testimonies, our Parenting for Life class, and recent worship services,' plus 'a dedicated livestream of our Sunday worship services.' The Grace Media page adds The Essential Church, a feature documentary made by Grace Productions, a department within the church, about pastors who reopened their buildings during the COVID lockdowns, and lists Ranger Joe at two seasons.

No total title count is published anywhere - not on the church's page, not on either store listing. A reader cannot tell from anything Grace Community Church publishes whether the library holds 60 items or 600. SermonAudio, free on the same terms, foregrounds its archive size instead.

Sermons and the Sunday livestream

Sermons are in the app, but 'recent' is the operative word in the church's own description, and the practical route to preaching is the church website, where sermon pages carry 'Watch on Grace Media' and 'Watch on YouTube' links alongside podcast feeds. Version 9.0 added audio sermons, so listening rather than watching is now supported.

The livestream is the app's strongest single argument. It is dedicated to the Sunday worship services rather than reposted to a social feed, which matters for members who are travelling, ill or homebound. Quality auto-adjusts and can be forced manually 'up to 1080P', the ceiling the church publishes. There is no published 4K tier and no casting instruction.

The account wall and what the app collects

Nothing plays until you register. The FAQ states 'You only need to create an account to view the content,' with phone number, Google or Apple as the options. For a free app with no subscription that is pure friction, and it is the reason to read the privacy disclosures rather than skim them.

Apple's App Privacy panel lists coarse location, contact info, user ID, device ID and user content as linked to you, and search history, usage data, diagnostics and advertising data as collected but not linked. Google Play's Data safety card states that personal info and device or other IDs are shared with third parties, that data is encrypted in transit and that deletion can be requested. Both can be technically true alongside a no-ads description - an analytics SDK is not an advertisement - but a reader handing over a phone number should see them side by side.

Where Grace Media falls behind

No offline download, in any document. The App Store description, the Google Play listing and the church's Grace Media FAQ are the three places a buyer would look, and none mentions downloading video or audio. The FAQ finds room to explain that resolution adjusts to connection speed and can be set manually up to 1080p - precisely the level of detail at which an offline feature would have been named if it existed. For an app whose marquee item is a feature-length film, that is the largest functional gap.

No transcripts and no captions claim. Grace to You publishes MacArthur's teaching as text as well as audio; Grace Media says nothing about either. Version 9.0 added 'downloadable PDFs', which is not the same thing - those are class handouts, not sermon transcripts. Anyone who studies by reading, searches by keyword, or needs subtitles has no published reason to expect help here.

An iOS binary 530 days old. Version 9.0.1 is dated 12 February 2025; to 27 July 2026 is 530 days. The Android build is dated 1 April 2025, which is 482 days. A streaming client that has not shipped in seventeen and a half months is one operating-system change away from a problem, and the church has published no roadmap.

A privacy panel that argues with the marketing. 'This app is completely 100% free and does not have in-app purchases or ads' sits in the App Store description. The same listing's App Privacy section declares advertising data among the categories collected, and Google Play discloses that personal info and device or other IDs are shared with third parties. The two can coexist in a technical reading. They should not have to be reconciled by the reader.

One language and no published title count. English is the only language on the App Store listing, and no catalogue total appears on any church or store page. Both are things a reader can only discover by installing.

Grace Media vs. SermonAudio vs. Desiring God vs. Ligonier

The axis is single-house catalogue against multi-teacher archive, and Grace Media sits at the far single-house end: one congregation's own video output. SermonAudio is the opposite model - a large searchable archive of preaching from thousands of broadcasters, with speakers, series and downloads, and no original production. If your complaint is that Grace Media holds recent sermons rather than decades of them, SermonAudio is the structural answer and it is also free. Grace to You is the specific answer: approximately 3,600 MacArthur sermons, free, hundreds never yet broadcast.

Desiring God and Ligonier occupy a third position: teaching ministries built around a single principal figure, John Piper and the late R.C. Sproul, publishing across formats and putting text at the centre rather than video. Both are free at the point of use and both beat Grace Media on written material and search. Neither has a documentary or a children's series. Grace Media is the only one of the four that makes original film.

Doctrinally the four are close neighbours, and a reader should know that rather than be sold past it. Grace Community Church's doctrinal statement affirms that 'election is the sovereign act of God by which, before the foundation of the world, He unconditionally chose in Christ all those whom He would ever graciously regenerate, save, and sanctify'; that 'speaking in tongues and the working of sign miracles in the beginning days of the church have now ceased' and that 'no one possesses the gift of healing today'; and that Christ will make 'the personal, bodily appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ before the seven-year tribulation' and then establish 'His messianic kingdom for a thousand years on the earth.' That is Reformed soteriology, cessationist on the miraculous gifts, dispensational premillennial on prophecy, elder-led in government and expositional in the pulpit. Desiring God and Ligonier share the Reformed soteriology and the broad cessationist position; neither is dispensational in the same way. Readers from charismatic or continuationist traditions will meet that framing throughout Grace Media, and readers from Catholic, Orthodox or Anabaptist traditions will find the whole set is not addressing them.
