1 Chronicles 28:9
“And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.”

Near the end of his life, David assembles Israel's leaders to present Solomon as his successor and to transfer the divinely given plans for the temple. In 1 Chronicles 28 David charges both the assembly and his son to keep the commandments of the Lord. Verse 9 is the personal heart of that charge, spoken directly to Solomon as he takes up the throne and the sacred building.
What Does 1 Chronicles 28:9 Mean?
This is a father's last great charge to his son before handing over the kingdom and the temple project. David tells Solomon to do two things above all: know God personally, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind. Knowing here is not just knowing about God; it is the deep, relational knowledge that grows from walking with Him. And the service David wants is not grudging duty but glad, undivided devotion -- a heart that is complete and a mind that is willing.
David then gives the reason this matters so much: "the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts." God sees past outward performance to the inner motives. Religion can be faked before people, but never before the One who reads every thought. The verse closes with a clear path set before Solomon: "if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off." The promise is real and so is the warning. God genuinely makes Himself available to those who pursue Him, and He honors the freedom of those who turn away. This is the heart of covenant faithfulness -- a relationship that calls for our real participation, lived out before a God who knows us completely and still invites us to seek Him.
In the Original Language
The Hebrew "yada" (know) means intimate, experiential knowledge. "Shalem" (perfect) describes a whole, undivided heart, and "darash" (seek) means to pursue God earnestly and resort to Him.
