What Does 1 John 1:4 Mean?
Having stated the purpose of fellowship, John names a further aim: that joy may be full. The whole letter is offered as a gift toward gladness, not as a burden of rules. He writes so that nothing will be lacking in his readers' joy.
Joy that is full flows from knowing whose we are and where we belong. When fellowship with the Father and the Son is secure, the heart finds a gladness the world cannot give or take. John wants his readers to taste that completeness, the overflowing joy that Jesus promised to those who abide in Him.
In the Original Language
chara (χαρά), 'joy' -- deep gladness rooted in God, which John desires to be made full in his readers.
