Context

Defining the love he has been urging, John points to the historical sending of God's Son as the supreme demonstration of God's love and the source of true life.

What Does 1 John 4:9 Mean?

John shows where God's love became visible: in sending his only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through him. "Manifested" means made clear and shown openly -- God's love is not a vague claim but a demonstrated reality with a concrete event behind it. The phrase "only begotten Son" underscores the costliness of the gift; God sent the dearest one. The purpose is stated plainly: "that we might live through him." Apart from Christ there is no true life; through him, life is given. So God's love is defined here not by what we feel but by what God did at his own initiative for our sake. This verse keeps love from drifting into sentiment by tying it to the sending of the Son and the gift of life. It also turns our gaze outward and upward -- love begins with God's action, not ours. The flow is from God's love, to the sending of the Son, to life for us. To grasp how much God loves is to look at the Son he sent and the life he secured for those who receive him.

In the Original Language

The Greek ephanerothe ("was manifested") means made openly visible, and monogenes ("only begotten") highlights the unique, precious nature of the Son.

Application

When you doubt God's love, look at the concrete proof -- the Son he sent so that you might truly live.
