What Does 1 John 4:8 Mean?
John reaches the bottom of everything he has been saying and lays down a foundation stone: God is love. He says more than that God is loving, as one quality among many: love is the very ground of His being. Everything God does flows from this. And so John can say plainly that the person who does not love does not really know God, because to know a God who is love and remain cold to others would be a contradiction. Knowing this God changes us; His love cannot be truly met and leave us unmoved.
