What Does John 3:16 Mean?
Jesus begins with the reach of God's love: the world. The whole aching world of people, reaching every nation and sweeping in far more than the deserving few. That love is measured by a gift, and the gift is a Son, His only begotten, the dearest thing heaven had to give. Love here opens its hands and gives away what it treasures most, far more than a warm feeling held at a distance.
And the door is thrown wide: 'whosoever believeth.' No one is shut out by birth or background or past. To believe in Him is to lean our whole weight on Him, and the promise is life that does not end. This is the gospel in a single sentence. The Father gave the Son so that we, who could only perish on our own, might live forever in His keeping.

Here no substitute is found in the last moment; the Son Himself is the offering, carried all the way to the cross. "Whosoever believeth" then holds the door open in every direction, so that the widest reach of love and the deepest cost of love meet, unwithheld, in a single sentence.
