Upon Ahab's death, Mesha stopped paying tribute and declared Moab's independence.

Context

The death of a strong king was often the spark for subject nations to break away; strength and succession are not the same thing.

What Does 2 Kings 3:5 Mean?

But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel, patience and rebellion wait for their moment. Mesha had paid for years, perhaps grinding his teeth with each flock sent north. Ahab was feared; Ahab was mighty. Then Ahab fell. The door opened.

In this turning point, we see how quickly order can unravel. Yet God's hand is not absent from the rebellion of Moab any more than from Ahab's death. The stage shifts; the players move.

Application

When circumstances change, we discover what we truly believe. Mesha's rebellion shows us a man waiting for his chance; we are called to something higher, to loyalty that does not merely wait for our master to fall.
