What Does 2 Samuel 19:26 Mean?
Mephibosheth answers the king's question. He had intended to follow David, asking for a donkey to be saddled so that he, being lame in both feet, could ride out with the king. But his servant Ziba deceived him, going off without him and then slandering him to David. The truth, he says, is the opposite of the accusation.
The vulnerable are easily wronged, and Mephibosheth, lame and dependent, was betrayed by the very servant meant to help him. Yet he does not rage; he tells the truth plainly and entrusts himself to the king's judgment. There is dignity in such honesty. God hears the cause of those whom others have deceived and defrauded, and weighs their words in mercy.
