What Does 2 Thessalonians 2:14 Mean?
Paul traces how God's saving purpose reached the Thessalonians: He "called you by our gospel." The eternal purpose of God did not stay distant or abstract; it came to them through the ordinary preaching of the good news. The message they heard from Paul was the very means God used to summon them to Himself.
And the goal of that calling is staggering: "the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." Believers are called not merely to escape judgment but to share in the very glory of Christ. The destiny held out here is to come into possession of His glory, to be brought into the radiance that belongs to the Lord Himself. This lifts the gospel from a rescue operation to a glorious inheritance. The same Christ in whom they were called is the glory they are being drawn toward, and the preached word was the doorway in.
