These words finish the sentence begun in 2 Thessalonians 2:16, where Paul invokes the Lord Jesus and the Father. He prays this for a church shaken by deception, asking God to steady them inwardly and outwardly.
What Does 2 Thessalonians 2:17 Mean?
This verse completes the prayer Paul began in verse 16. Having named the Lord Jesus and the Father as the givers of everlasting comfort and good hope, he now states what he asks them to do: "Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work." The two requests belong together. First comes inner comfort -- God steadying the heart against fear and discouragement. Then comes establishing -- God making the believer firm and stable so that comfort produces a settled, fruitful life rather than mere relief.
Notice that Paul prays for comfort and strength to show up "in every good word and work." The goal is not a private, passive peace but a life that overflows into faithful speech and faithful action. God's comfort is meant to make people steadier and more useful, not idle. This balance answers the situation of the Thessalonians directly: some had grown unsettled and even disorderly because of false teaching about the end. Paul's remedy is not simply to calm them down but to plant them firmly in lives marked by goodness. The same God who reassures the heart also strengthens the hands and the lips for the work He gives.
In the Original Language
The Greek "parakaleo" (comfort) carries the sense of encouraging and consoling. "Sterizo" (stablish) means to fix firmly, to make stable or strengthen. "Ergon" (work) refers to deed or action that flows from a person's character.
