Context

Spoken by the risen Jesus to His apostles just before His ascension, this verse answers their question about restoring the kingdom and sets the agenda for the whole book of Acts.

What Does Acts 1:8 Mean?

Acts 1:8 is the promise of empowered witness -- Jesus tells His followers they will receive power from the Holy Ghost and carry His message from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. This verse functions as the table of contents for the entire book of Acts. The disciples had just asked whether Jesus would now restore the kingdom to Israel, fixing their attention on national politics and timing. Jesus redirects them entirely. Instead of dates and borders, He gives them a mission and the means to accomplish it.

The word "power" here is dynamis -- not raw force but enabling strength, the capacity to do what could never be done by human effort alone. This power is tied directly to the coming of the Holy Ghost, fulfilled days later at Pentecost. The result of receiving that power is not personal comfort but witness: "ye shall be witnesses unto me." The Greek word behind "witnesses" is martys, from which we get martyr, hinting at the costly testimony many of these men would give. The geography is deliberate and expanding -- Jerusalem (home), Judaea and Samaria (neighboring and even despised regions), and finally "the uttermost part of the earth." The gospel was never meant to stay in one place or among one people. It moves outward, crossing every boundary, until it reaches everyone.

In the Original Language

The Greek "dynamis" (power) denotes enabling strength rather than mere force, and "martys" (witness) carries the weight of personal testimony, later associated with martyrdom.

Application

Believers today share the same commission and the same source of strength -- the Spirit empowers ordinary people to testify of Christ wherever they are, starting close to home and reaching ever outward.
