What Does Acts 22:14 Mean?
Ananias interprets the Damascus road for Paul. This call is no break with Israel's faith: the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has himself appointed Paul to see and to hear the Just One, the title Stephen gave the Messiah before this same city (Acts 7:52; compare Acts 3:14).
Paul's apostleship rests on sight and hearing: he saw the risen Lord and heard the voice of his mouth (1 Corinthians 9:1; 15:8). God chooses in order to reveal, and reveals in order to send. The title 'Just One' holds the wonder of the gospel: the Righteous One receives a man with blood on his hands and makes him a servant of righteousness.
